TO THEE OUR DEAR OAKWOOD
CHORUS

To thee our dear Oakwood
To thee we shall ever sing
For decades thou has stood
Thy name shall ever ring,
Here we spend our happy days.
And we love to sing thy praise.
And where-ever we may be,
We will always be true to thee.
Our worthy old, old O.C.

1.

Our dear Oakwood within those vale

Thy standards will not fail.

Our hearts are filled with wondrous cheer

When thoughts of thee draw near.

We love thy pines, thy elms, thy oaks

And campus always green.

The many flowers and distant mounts.

Form one impressive scene.

2.

From states afar and isles of sea

Thy students come to thee.

And fain do linger in thy halls

Enlightened truthfully

From nature's scenes they ever learn,

And study from thy soil,

Till many more thy works discern.

We'll pray for thee and toil.

3.
As happy birds come in the spring
And sing not for their pay.
Rich, natural melodies they bring
Cheering thruout the day.
We too, will serve thee faithfully
In all we do and say.
We hope in Good, we trust in thee
True and loyal we'll be.

Of the various constituencies which can help the fu-
ture of this college, none is more important than its
alumni, -

While over the years Oakwood College has
produced graduates of quality, its ability to continue this
tradition rests in a large part with our distinguished and
dedicated alumni. Your efforts in the areas of student
recruitment, fundraising, and telling the "Oakwood Story" are absolutely necessary
for the College's health and vitality. We welcome your presence at this Homecom-
ing, and applaud your continued active support for our beloved Oakwood as we
move toward countdown Centennial — 1996.

The Late A, Samuel Rashford

Member of Oakwood College Board of Trustees and President of the New
York Chapter of the Oakwood College Alumni Association (renamed the A.
Samuel Rashford Chapter).

R is for race, a man of great pride;

A is for all the programs lie tried.

S is for sure he l^new well his mission;

H is for honor and holy ambition.

F is for frankness; he spoke well his mind,

O is for Oakwood — his nnission sublime.

R is for royalty a trait he projected.

D is for delivering on tasks he accepted.
Together you see that in God's wondrous plan,
He gave us a name that fits well the man.
And we who are left with life's problems to solve,
Might now in his memory stoutly resolve,
To take up the cause and fill in the space,
And work as he did for our God and our race.

BY C. B. ROCK

Poem read at funeral of Samuel A. Rashford on November 21, 1982.

ANGELA STOVALL

Angela Stovall is a native of New York City.
Daughter of Samuel Stovall and Sylvia Chand-
ler Stovall, Angie is a product of Christian edu-
cation from the first grade. After attending
Adventist elementary schools, Angie went to
Pioneer Valley Academy in New Braintree,
Massachusetts. There she was a member of
the National Honor Society and participated in
the National Merit Scholarship program. She
graduated with honors in 1978 and purposed
to continue her education at Oakwood College.
After all, her mother, father, sister, and a host
of other relatives had attended Oakwood be-
fore her. While attending Oakwood, Angie was
the Academic Vice President of USM, and a ' --'.'''

member of the Aeolians. in 1982, she graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor's
Degree in business administration.

Upon graduation, Angie received a graduate fellowship to study at The Ohio State
University. While a student at Ohio State, she became a charter member of IMAGE,
an organization of Seventh-day Adventist students matriculating at Ohio State. She was
the president of this organization from 1 984 to 1 986. During those years, IMAGE helped
to support and encourage Adventist as well as non-Adventist students, and sponsored
concerts, retreats, and other events for the inspiration of students engaged in campus life.

In 1984, Angie began her career at Merrill Publishing Company while still attend-
ing Ohio State In 1987, she graduated from Ohio State with a Master's Degree in
mathematics education. Angie was a mathematics textbook editor at Merrill from 1984
until 1988. During this time, she edited some of the company's most profitable titles.
Recently she was promoted to Assistant Director of Training and Development for the
School Division. There she is responsible for the training of new editors and freelance
workers.

Angle is an active member of the Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church in Colum-
bus, Ohio. There she gives praise and honor to God with her lovely voice. She is also
an active member of the Columbus Area Chapter of the Oakwood Alumni Association.
A firm believer in the "Oakwood College Magic," Angie encourages every Black Ad-
ventist young person to attend Oakwood, if only for a short time. She knows that they
can be transformed, just as she was. Angie has proven her love for Oakwood and will
continue to demonstrate that love by giving her support so that others can have this
great opportunity. We are proud to present this young lady as the Oakwood College
Alumna of the Year.

was while at Oakwood he became known as

campus with his "campus family." The darling
of his family, Georgia Battle, later became his

Parents of the Year

ELDER and MRS. WILLIAM L. CHEATHAM

■4

Elder and Mrs. Cheatham, the parents of eight children, six sons and two daugh-
ters, are staunch believers in and supporters of Christian Education. They sent all of
the children to Seventh-day Adventist schools and today all of the children and grand-
children are members of, and most are active in, the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Elder Cheatham, the oldest of three sons born to William and Lydia Cheatham,
was born in Belzoni, Mississipi. He attended SDA school in Greenville, Mississippi, school
in Memphis, Tennessee, and then went on to Oakwood Academy and College. He was
at Oakwood from 1917-1920. From Oakwood he went to Baltimore, Maryland where
he met Laura E. Muir, They were married in 1922. He pastored churches in the
Chesapeake and Allegheny Conference for twenty-three years and served as presi-
dent of the Allegheny Conference for thirteen years at which time he served on the
Oakwood College Board. It was during his presidency that the administration building
(Wagner Hall), the girl's dormitory (Kimbrough Hall), and the swimming pool were built
at Pine Forge Academy. During his ministry he was blessed to be able to baptize more
than one thousand persons.

Mrs. Laura Cheatham was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She received her
education in Philadelphia and Baltimore. Mrs. Cheatham is a devoted mother to her
children and, therefore, spent most of her life at home rearing the children in the fear
and admonition of the Lord, being a supportive companion to her husband and a
shepherdess of the church. Later she attended Business School and was secretary
to Elder Cheatham and other department leaders at Allegheny Conference.

Six of the eight children received their academy and/or college education at Oak-
wood. All pursued professional careers in various fields of endeavor.

William entered government service and rose to the position of Adjudicator before
retiring from the Social Security Administration. He is now employed as a banker in
Baltimore, Maryland.

Ann became a teacher. She taught in the SDA system for eleven and a half years
(one year as critic teacher at Oakwood) and twenty-seven years in the Baltimore Public
School system. She is now retired. She is treasurer and assistant organist of her church
and president of the Baltimore chapter of the Oakwood Alumni Association.

Message Excellence Award

ELDER ROBERT WOODFORK

Elder Robert L. Woodfork, a minister of
great stature and experience, has been a bless-
ing to the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Re-
cently retired as Associate Secretary of the s
General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, ^
Elder Woodfork leaves behind him a legacy of
noteworthy accomplishments that have helped
to build and strengthen the work of the church
worldwide.

He obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree
from Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska, in ''"^

1944. In 1945 he and his "sweetheart", the former
Norma Jean Bedney, were married in Kansas
City, Missouri. His ministerial career was
launched in the Missouri Conference of SDAs,

where he pastored in Sedalia and St. Joseph, Missouri. In 1947 he was called by the
Central States Mission (later the Central States Conference) to pastor in Kansas City,
Kansas. That same year he was ordained to the gospel ministry. From there he went
to Oakwood College where he served as pastor/dean of men from 1952 until 1955. He
also taught in Oakwood's Department of Religion during that period. From 1953 to 1954
he attended the SDA Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.

After leaving Oakwood in 1955, Elder Woodfork accepted a call to the Southwest
Region Conference where he pastored the New Orleans, Louisiana church for the next
eight years. South Atlantic Conference then called him in 1963 to pastor the Miami, Florida,
church. During his seven years in Miami, he and coevangelist Joe Hinson held a series
of evangelistic meetings that earned him the reputation of being a "foot-stomping evan-
gelist." From there he moved to Atlanta, Georgia where he pastored the Berean SDA
Church for one year prior to becoming president of the South Atlantic Conference. While
pastoring in Atlanta, he led out in a highly successful church growth program.

From 1971 to 1980 he served as president of the South Atlantic Conference, wit-
nessing an outstanding period of growth and prosperity. Under his administration, the
conference's tithe and membership doubled, making it necessary to divide the confer-
ence into two entities; thus Southeastern Conference was formed. In 1980 he was invit-
ed to the GC to assume the position of General Field Secretary for North America and
liason for the Regional Conferences. In 1985 he became Associate Secretary of the Gener-
al Conference. It was there that Elder Woodfork gave invaluable counsel to countless
committees, projects, and to the Regional presidents, it was also while at the GC that
he worked closely with MESSAGE magazine and, in cooperation with Elder Charles

Bradford chaired the MESSAGE Strategy Council. Also, along with Elder Charles Brad-
ford, he cochaired the MESSAGE Advisory Board (made up of the Regional presidents
and other leaders) which gives MESSAGE outstanding support.

Elder Woodfork is a dynamic leader who has earned the high respect of all who
know him. His wise counsel and expertise have been an invaluable resource to the
SDA church. In 1980 the North Carolina SDA Minister's Association cited him for out-
standing leadership. He has held membership on the board of trustees of numerous
organizations, hospitals, and institutions, including the National Urban League, the
NAACP, Oakwood College (vice-chairman), Andrews University, and the Adventist Media
Center. His busy days at the GC included membership on the GC Executive Commit-
tee, the GC Officer's Committee, and the NAD Officer's Committee, in addition to his
regular workload. He was also chairman of the Specialized Ministries Committee and
the Regional Publishing Subcommittee. He served as secretary of the Credentials and
Licenses Committee, the Regional Scholarship Committee, and the Inner City Commit-
tee, and served on a host of other committees.

His wife. Norma Jean, who has been a true source of strength and encourage-
ment to him throughout his ministry, is the mother of their three children: Robert L.,
Jr., Kathleen Ann Bradley, and Ronald A. Elder and Mrs. Woodfork also have four very
dear grandchildren - two boys and two girls. All three children and their families are
faithful members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Truly the Lord's cause has ad-
vanced greatly as a result of His faithful servant, Elder Robert L Woodfork.

Elder Henry J. Fordham III and members of Berea Temple wish to acknowledge
ELDER and MRS. WILLIAM L. CHEATHAM SR. as Oakwood College Alumni
Association's "Parents of the Year". We cordially extend to them our sincere ap-
preciation for their outstanding leadership as our first family for almost a decade.
During his tenure. Elder Cheatham skillfully negotiated the acquisition of our
present church home in 1951 from the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation.

In 1988 the Board of Directors established the Centennial Restoration Campaign
Committee for the purpose of restoring Berea Temple. We will celebrate a centur\-
of continuous Sabbath Day observance in 1991, a first in the annals oi religious
history in the State of Maryland.

Thanks again, ELDER and MRS. CHEATHAM, for vour spiritual and adminis-
trative leadership. You were luminaries for our time.

To Our Antoinette

As you are honored today, we are so proud of
your many achievements.

In loving Memory of JOSEPH GILBERT BAILEY

Our beloved husband, father, son, brother, and uncle. We salute \ou
in his memory, for he always said, "LET SIS DO IT!"

Congratulations on your most deserved 1989 Merit Aicard.

We LOVE YOU!

THE FAMILY

My Dear Annette (Amy),

I remember you were just a four year old, little girl when
you expressed a desire to become a teacher. You have been
exceptional, outstanding, and an example of a virtuous,
dedicated teacher for so many years. Now your work as an
Oakwood alumna still finds you dedicated and true to duty as
"the needle to the pole".

You've always been so special and my favorite niece. We all
LOVE you.

I Love Oak wood

I love Oakwood!

I love the winding paths and lanes,

The dogwood blooming in the spring,

the mountains in their hazy blue,

The daffodils and vioiets too,

Who dare to face cold winds that blow,

And raise their heads through ice and

snow,
I want the whole round world to know
I love Oakood!

I love Oakwood!
I love Its tiny streams and rills.
Its bovines grazing on the hills.
Those grassy, sloping, rolling hills,
The quiet of its restful peace,
The blessedness of sweet release,
The grandeur of God's mighty power
Exploding in its vesper hour
I love Oakwood!

I love Oakwood!

I love its precious memories

Its tall, majestic, stately trees,

I love its summers, spring time too.

Even mourning doves with their sad

coo.
The traffic that comes pouring
through

Its footpaths and its narrow streets.
Where friends from far off places met,
I love Oakwood!

I love Oakwood!

I love the wholesome fellowship.
The smiles that flash across the lips
Of those who happen to pass by,
As Oakwood's sun lit up their sky,
I love the sacred tie that binds
All Oakwoodites where e'er they're

found.
The grip that hold men everywhere,
who say of Oakwood, "I was there."
I love Oakwood!

I love Oakwood!

I love Its gentle falling ram,

That kiss the fields of waving gram,

The corn that stands so straight and

tall.
How one can even be enthralled.
Just standing in those hallowed halls.
I loves its grounds, its bright red sod.
That makes one feel so close to God.
i love Oakwood'
